PRETREAT

Biomass and waste feedstock undergoes pre-treatment steps to reduce moisture content to below 10 wt% and size to below about 6 mm. Waste heat is used to dry the feedstock while milling and grinding is used to form small particles from the feedstock. Any carbonaceous feed can be used, however process is optimised for woody biomass and waste feedstocks.

CONVERT

The heart of Ventura's process is the Integrated Catalytic Pyrolysis (ICP) technology which reacts the feedstock with a catalyst and hydrogen in a proprietary fluidised bed reactor system. The catalyst leads to improved quality of the resulting bio-crude and is continuously re-generated with oxygen and steam.

USE

The resulting bio-crude is a chemically and thermally stable product with a lower oxygen content and higher heating value than bio-crudes formed from other pyrolysis technologies.  The superior properties means the bio-crude is a suitable feedstock for bio-refining applications to manufacture transport fuels; or for as a diesel replacement in stationary power generation applications.

PROJECTS

Integrated Catalytic Pyrolysis Development

Ventura Energy is currently undertaking development work on the Integrated Catalytic Pyrolysis process. Catalyst screening studies at laboratory scale and process design work for the pilot plant are currently underway.

Bio-crude demonstration plant

Ventura Energy is currently identifying the location of its first bio-crude demonstration plant, with the intent to enter production in two to three years.  The first project will convert 100 to 200 tpd of agricultural residues or woody wastes into partially upgraded bio-crude and bio-gas for electricity production.

TECHNOLOGY

The Integrated Catalytic Pyrolysis (ICP) process which Ventura Energy is developing in collaboration with its research and development partners is a technology to convert lignocellulosic and carbonaceous feedstocks into partially upgraded bio-crudes that can be used as a replacement for heavy fuels and diesel in some applications or can be refined into renewable transport fuels, such as diesel, gasoline and jet fuel in dedicated bio-refineries.
